In the work, Vasari brings together facts, knowledge, and sometimes gossip about almost 200 Renaissance artists. It is also the first comprehensive book on art history ever created. Due to the size and the large number of illustrations, each volume is priced at $299. In his book, Lives of the Artists, first published in 1550, and then again as a second edition in 1568, Vasari gives a detailed account of the lives and known.
